Diversity definitions
As part of understanding Diversity, this page explains briefly what is meant by some key phrases covering the various themes of Diversity.
Ageism
Stereotypes and prejudices held about people on grounds of their age.
Appearance
The way a person or thing looks to other people.
Beliefs
The feelings of certainty that something exists or is true.
Disability
Disability is the functional limitation within the individual caused by physical, mental or sensory impairment.
Diversity
Diversity is the acknowledgement and respect of differences within and between groups of people. Equality is the framework that enables opportunity, access, participation and contribution that is fair and inclusive.
Elitism
The belief that certain persons or members of certain classes or groups deserve favored treatment by virtue of their perceived superiority, as in intellect, social status, or financial resources.
Gender
The physical and/or social condition of being male or female.
Health
Health is a state of physical, mental and social well-being.
Language
Language discrimination is when a person is treated differently for the way he or she speaks.
Mental Health
The condition of the mind and the degree to which it is free from illness, or the state of being well.
Race
A group with particular similar physical characteristics, who are considered as belonging to the same type, or the fact of belonging to such a group.
Religion
The belief in and worship of a god or gods, or any such system of belief and worship.
Sexuality
The condition of being characterized and distinguished by sexual orientation.
